Making your make-up last when supplies are short

During the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, many people found that favourite products were hard to get. Shops closed or limited stock, deliveries slowed, and some items sold out online for weeks. The good news is that most of us already own more make-up than we realise, and with a little care it can last a long time without running out or becoming unsafe to use.

Take stock before you buy

Start by gathering everything from drawers, bags and bathroom shelves. Group items by type and check their condition. Many products carry a small open-jar symbol showing how many months they are meant to last after opening. Mascara and liquid eyeliner are usually the shortest-lived, while powders tend to keep much longer. Anything that smells off, has separated or changed texture is better thrown away than used near your eyes or skin.

Simple ways to stretch what you have

  • Use less, more often refreshed: a small amount of foundation blended with moisturiser can give lighter, longer-lasting coverage.
  • Get to the last drop: cutting open tubes or using a small spatula can reveal a surprising amount of leftover product.
  • Multi-task: a cream blush can often double as lip or eye colour, reducing the number of products you depend on.
  • Store carefully: keep products away from heat, steam and direct sunlight, and always close lids tightly.

Hygiene matters more than ever

Avoid sharing make-up, especially lip and eye products, and wash brushes and sponges regularly with mild soap and warm water. Wash your hands before applying anything to your face. If you develop irritation, redness or an eye infection, stop using the products involved and speak to a pharmacist or your own doctor.
